The Trombone Studio at The University of Arizona is one of the more active
studios in the School of Music and Dance. With two large concert bands, a
select wind ensemble, two jazz big bands, numerous jazz combos and a large
and challenging orchestra program (two orchestras including the orchestra
for an opera program of national renown), trombonists have all the large
ensemble challenges they could ever want. In addition, there are brass
chamber music ensembles and usually a trombone choir.
Performance Opportunities
UA trombone players have many opportunities to travel and perform. Last
year the Wind Ensemble toured Europe as part of the International Wind
Ensemble Conference. This spring (2002) both the orchestra and jazz band
are taking tours to Mexico.
The Advantages of Size
Our School of Music and Dance population of between 450 and 550 students
provides opportunities which are only offered by some of the larger
conservatories of music, while our large and professional faculty allows
for a great deal of personal attention, both in studio and integrated
performance situations.
The number of students in the trombone studio has varied in the last
several years from about fifteen to twenty players. Our studio typically
includes students of many performance levels, from talented first year
students who may not be majoring in music, to graduate students pursuing
specialized degrees such as the Doctor of Music Arts in trombone
performance. With this highly diverse population, we have been able to
maintain an attitude of friendly competition, cooperation and mutual
support which has served the students well in helping to develop their full
musical potential.
Our Graduates
Graduates of the Trombone Studio of The University of Arizona have gone on
to pursue careers in many areas of music. Many are currently teaching, some
at the public school level, some in community colleges, and some at the
university level. Several hold professional playing positions in full-time
orchestras or military bands while many continue to perform in smaller
regional orchestras.
Our Community
The University of Arizona has a student population of about 38,000. It is
located in Tucson, Arizona, the metropolitan population of which approaches
800,000. The size of the city and the fact that the arts are an important
part of community life, are an important part of community life, and are
attractive factors to prospective music students.
Tucson Music Organizations
There are four major professional arts organizations in the city: The
Arizona Theater Company, Ballet Arizona, the Arizona Opera Company, and the
Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, there are several citywide
orchestras and bands, which provide performance opportunities for aspiring
students.
